We can all agree that wearing your seatbelt is such a basic yet life saving thing to do. No matter how short or long your journey is.
It can be a huge factor in the survival of a person.
These people who have survived car crashes can’t thank their belts enough for saving their lives.
unfortunately, many people don’t wear their belts when driving due to being lazy and this puts them at serious risk.
It’s been reported that seatbelts dramatically reduce the risk of death and serious injury in a car accident by a huge fifty percent.
NZ Transport Agency recently begun a campaign to raise awareness of seatbelt safety.
On their website, they state:
“These guys live rurally or in the provinces and they are a particularly ‘hard to reach’ bunch of lads. The types of crashes they have often happen late at night after drinking. They don’t wear seatbelts. They know about them but see them as an optional extra – not something ‘proper’ adult men need to use. Kids or ‘worriers’ and people who follow the rules wear them just to be doing the right thing.”
“These guys drive roughly and think that a crash is inevitable. They’ve had their share of dings and while their mates may have crashed too, that’s just part of driving. They think that if you’re going to have a big one (crash), that’s just the hand you’ve been dealt and there’s nothing you can do about it”
Here are a few survivors stories:
This is Liam Bethell and his seatbelt saved his life.
Only 200 meters from home, Liam was T-boned by a truck that left him with broken ribs, fractured discs in his back, and a bleed on his brain. He stayed in a coma for 10 days.
He woke up from his coma the day before the birth of his daughter.
This is Kahutia Foster, he was heading home after visiting his nephew when his car rolled on a corner…his seatbelt saved his life.
Kahutia says that his children are a huge reminder why wearing a seatbelt is so important.
Dan Mason was hit by a drunk driver…
At just twenty-one, he was driving home from a late-night shift when a drunk driver hit him breaking his jaw, a rib.. and he suffered brain damage to his frontal and temporal lobes.
He made an incredible recovery thanks to wearing his seatbelt.
