Michael Clark Jr. had been fostered by Andrea Melvin and Dave Eaton just over a year ago. And on Thursday, they became his parents forever.

And a situation like that can be nerve-wracking. So in order to offer their support, Michael’s classmates from Wealthy Elementary in East Grand Rapids decided they wanted to be there for him on this special day. So, during the hearing, his friends created “heart-sticks” that they waved while the process went on.

17th Circuit Court Family Division Judge Patricia Gardner acknowledged them before the hearing formally began, saying: “I understand we are joined by Michael’s kindergarten classroom and teacher,” to which they waved their little hearts.

Andrea Melvin and Dave Eaton were very excited to be bringing Michael into their family permanently.

“We were thinking, ‘How can we build our family?’ And there are so many options, right, for building a family these days.”

Andrea also added that Michael really wanted his classmates to be there on his special day and they were happy to oblige.  Michael’s teacher, Kerry McKee, said there was a lesson for the children to prepare them for the courthouse.

“The lesson is put a little love in your heart. We rise when we support others.”

That’s a bit of advice we should all keep in mind.
