McDonald’s Is Bringing Back ’90s Happy Meal Toys

What do you think about when you think about Happy Meals? The burgers? The fries? The drink, be it milkshake or coke? It might be a McFlurry.

But to most, it’s the toys. During a trip to McDonald’s as kids, the food itself was merely a bonus. As soon you got that box, you were opening it for the toy.

Well great news, they’re bringing back some absolute classics in time for the 40th anniversary of the Happy Meal!

On Thursday, Oct. 31, the fast food dons announced they’d be honouring the “the 40th anniversary of the first-ever Happy Meal… [by] launching the limited-edition Surprise Happy Meal with some of its most popular Happy Meal toys from the last four decades.” The list includes “15 iconic toys,” some of which are ’90s standards like the McDonald’s Hot Wheels Thunderbird, the Hamburglar, Power Rangers, Patti the Platypus, Tamagotchi, My Little Pony, and of course, Furby.

“Parents tell us how fondly they recall their favorite toys,” said Colin Mitchell, McDonald’s Senior Vice President, Global Marketing. “So, unboxing the Surprise Happy Meal together creates a real moment of bonding with their children. We hope these toys are something that they will treasure and remember.”

As per the company press release: “In addition to creating fun moments, the Happy Meal is well-loved for providing delicious favourites like Chicken McNuggets and hamburgers.

“Over the years, many new, balanced choices have been added to the Happy Meal so parents can feel good about the options they’re feeding their families. Globally, McDonald’s has served more than 6.4 billion fruit, vegetable, low-fat dairy and water options in Happy Meals since 2013.”
