A heartbreaking photo has gone viral online depicting the heartbreaking and haunting moment a group of young firefighters forced their way into the burning warehouse at the port of Beirut.
The photo, and subsequent videos, show the team of firefighters doing everything they can to get inside the warehouse as the huge fire is raging.
Sadly, and as I’m sure you are all now aware, the warehouse exploded with such force that it shattered windows 10km away and could be heard in Cyrpus, 250km away.
Although it is not confirmed, it is believed that all those pictured tragically died.
You can see the photo below.
President Michel Aoun said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate – used in fertilisers and as an explosive – which were being stored in the warehouse.
The president ordered those in charge of guarding the ammonium nitrate to be placed under house arrest, adding that those responsible will face the consequences.
Lebanon is currently in a state of emergency and powers have been handed over to the military as the explosion is investigated.
At a time of writing the death toll is over 150, with another 5,000 injured.
Our thoughts continue to go out to those affected by this horrific tragedy, and to the families of those brave firefighters who sacrificed themselves to try and save countless lives.
