The child was standing near an ice sculpture when a huge block of it fell off, striking her were she stood.

The young girl and her family were visiting the Place Guillaume II at about 8 pm yesterday, and medical help was instantly called.

Eyewitnesses say the sculpture collapsed near an ice rink and shattered into pieces, fatally injuring the child.

The toddler died at the scene despite paramedics’ desperate efforts to resuscitate her, police confirmed this morning.

Witnesses say the girl’s distraught family were “left in tears” and are now being looked after by a local psychological support group.

Nobody deserves to lose a child, especially over the Christmas period.

RTL reported that Place Guillaume II was evacuated and closed off in the aftermath of the tragedy as forensic teams examined the location.

Local detectives have launched an investigation and are asking eyewitnesses to come forward with more information as it is unclear as to why the ice sculpture collapsed.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the little girl’s family during this devastating time.
