Emma Watson Roasted For Controversial Feminism Comments

Emma Watson has found herself in hot water after her apparently controversial comments on feminism have resurfaced.

The quote was shared to Twitter by campaign group The Women’s Organisation.

What happened next? Well Watson found herself being roasted on the internet for her comments.

You’re probably wondering what on Earth Watson could have said to warrant such an explosion of hate.

Well this is it:

If you want to run for prime minister, you can. If you don’t, that’s wonderful too.

Shave your armpits, don’t shave them, wear flats one day, heels the next.

We want to empower women to do exactly what they want.

People were particularly annoyed – claiming that her comments were ‘superficial feminism’.

One person wrote:

I get that 2020 is s*** but do we really need to bring our feminism back to 1994.

Another said:

What *do* women want? Equal pay? An end to forged marriage and honour killings? Reproductive rights? Zero tolerance of sexual harassment? No more FGM? Nah, heels.

A third claimed:

It’s almost as if she doesn’t know that women have already done all of these things. Even more surprisingly, they did it all without waiting for permission.

However if you read Emma’s full quote it appears the comments have been taken somewhat out of context.

The entire quote reads:

Feminism is not here to dictate to you. It’s not prescriptive, it’s not dogmatic. All we are here to do is give you a choice. If you want to run for prime minister, you can. If you don’t, that’s wonderful too. Shave your armpits, don’t shave them, wear flats one day, heels the next. These things are so irrelevant and surface to what it is all really about, and I wish people wouldn’t get caught up in that.

We want to empower women to do exactly what they want, to be true to themselves, to have the opportunities to develop. Women should feel free. There is no typical feminist, there is nothing anywhere that says you have to meet a certain criteria.
