Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49’ers quarterback turned civil rights activist, has taken to social media to post a powerful message in response to the killing of George Floyd.
Floyd’s death, under the knee of Minneapolis PD officer Derek Chauvin, has provoked outrage across the United States, with rioting and looting taking place in Minneapolis, last night.
Kaeperncik, who began the act of kneeling in protest during the National Anthem, a show of defiance against the racial injustices continuously carried out across America, in particular from police, has now had his say on the matter, showing his support to those who are rioting and revolting against the oppression still being suffered by African Americans.
Kaepernick wrote :
“When civility leads to death, revolting is the only logical reaction.
“The cries for peace will rain down, and when they do, they will land on deaf ears, because your violence has brought this resistance.
“We have the right to fight back!
“Rest in Power George Floyd”
Several high profile celebrities have used an image of Kaepernick kneeling alongside the picture of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck, alongside the words “This is why”.
Four officers connected with the killing have been fired by the Minneapolis Police Department.
