Todd Phillip’s brand new origin movie, Joker, only made its big-screen debut a matter of days ago, but it already seems to have been stirring up controversy with viewers.
The movie tells the story of the infamous anti-hero and how he becomes the clown-faced criminal mastermind we all know him as.

But theatre-goers have been left so disturbed after watching the movie that they have walking out of the cinema.
Taking to Twitter, one viewer said: “I’ve just walked out of the Joker. Maybe I was naive in going/didn’t realize what an origin story would be like, maybe because I live with someone with MH [mental health], it was just far too dark for me to be able to watch.”
Another wrote: “Mental illness is a serious topic…… Horrible, dark movie. We walked out of it. We don’t recommend it. We already live in a sick society, let’s not add to it please!”
While some people expressed concern, others thought the movie was Oscar-worthy.
“One of the best movies I have ever seen in my entire life. RIVETING. Oscar slam dunk,” said one user.

Either way, despite the mixed reactions following its debut, there’s no doubt the movie has been a smash hit so far – raking in over $90 million this weekend at the US box office.
Joker is in theatres worldwide now.
