Joker Director Reveals What He Wants In Sequel

ICYMI, Joker is more or less the biggest film of the year. It’s certainly the biggest R-rated film possibly of all time, with a box office nearing a staggering $1 billion.

It’s imagery, music, memes, have become ingrained in pop culture and are recognisable to those who haven’t even seen the film.

It begs the question: is there gonna be a sequel? In a world of multiple choice and instant content, naturally we want a second Joaquin Phoenix Joker film ASAP and for good reason – especially after Jared Leto’s egregious portrayal of Batman’s arch nemesis.

While a follow-up isn’t officially in the works, the movie’s director, Todd Phillips, isn’t exactly ruling it out. He just has some prerequisites about the project, telling The Los Angeles Times that a sequel would “have to have some thematic resonance.”

“It couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘Clown Prince of Crime,'” he told the Times. “It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that [‘Joker’] does. Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, it’s what’s going on underneath. So many movies are about the spark, and this is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting.”

As per ForbesJoker passed Deadpool and Deadpool 2 on Thursday to become the biggest R-rated movie of all time in global grosses. On Friday, it passed $800 million worldwide to become the first R-rated movie to hit that milestone.

It is expected to end up as profitable as Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. In short: Joker has done extremely well for a DC Comics origin story.

You can watch it in cinemas worldwide right now. Alternatively you could wait until Netflix inevitably bag the streaming rights sometime next year. Or just watch the trailer in ultra slow-motion so it feels like you’ve seen it.
