Huge Success For ‘The Lion King’ As Film Has The Biggest Opening Weekend Ever For Any Disney Remake

The Lion King has taken the box office by storm as the Disney remake has left films like The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast in it’s shadow as the remake has had the biggest opening ever.

With a hugely famous cast made up of Beyoncé as Nala and Donald Glover as Simba, the film has been such a success among cinema goers that people have returned multiple times to watch the film again.

The Lion King has reportedly amassed a huge $185 million (£149 million) from almost 5,000 North American cinemas over the course of its opening weekend.

The Lion King hit even bigger on the worldwide scale by collecting $269 million (£215 million) setting it’s global reach to $433 million (£346 million).

The Lion King is the second-best US domestic debut of 2019 so far just behind Avengers: Endgame.

Although the numbers are incredible, some critics weren’t too amazed by the production as the remake currently holds a 54 per cent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 300 reviews.

A critics comment:

“While it can take pride in its visual achievements, The Lion King is a by-the-numbers retelling that lacks the energy and heart that made the original so beloved–though for some fans that may just be enough”

Many critics have expressed their feelings that the remake has failed to bring any fresh take to a story we have all seen about one hundred times.
