Meet Shorty, The Adorable Dog With Separation Anxiety So His Human Bought Him A Mannequin

Sadly a lot of pets suffer from things such as separation anxiety. Puppies, in particular, have a hard time dealing with being left alone without and become very worked up and upset when they miss their owner.

They can show this anxiety in many different forms, such as constant barking, howling, or literally trash the place and rip or chew anything in their way.

This shouldn’t matter though, because the most important thing to do is make sure they’re okay and calm.

An animal organization went viral recently after sharing a unique way to solve this big problem. They used a mannequin to replicate a person the pet is missing. It’s genius.

Meet Shorty, the 15 year old senior pup who has been living with his owner Marc for 11 years and was previously adopted from a shelter.

Marc’s wife Kristen, revealed:

“Marc was working at a shelter in Reno when Shorty was surrendered. It was love at first sight and Marc adopted him”

Shorty really suffered with separation anxiety and hasn’t left Marc’s side for years. Marc even traveled to work with the pup.

Due to health concerns, Marc doesn’t like Shorty travelling with him any more, Kristen explained:

“Now that he’s older it’s too difficult for him and we don’t want him getting sick. When Marc is gone Shorty is extremely anxious. He’ll bark and cry and nothing will calm him.”

“If I hold him he’s still upset”

One day Kristen’s quick thinking mom came up with an idea to help him.

Kristen explained:

“She was over one day while Marc was away and saw how upset Shorty was. She went home and ordered the mannequin from a Halloween store that night.”

“When she told me about it, I thought she was nuts. I really didn’t think it would work and it would just be a funny photo opportunity”

Kristen knew that the mannequin had to resemble Marc as much as possible. So she proceeded to dress the mannequin in her husband’s clothes, and put tattoo sleeves on its arms.

The mannequin was named FARC (Fake – Marc) and placed it on the couch.

Amazingly, when Shorty cuddled up with the dummy, he calmed down.

Within 30 minutes Shorty was so relaxed that he fell asleep and stayed asleep all night.

Kristen thought it would make a hilarious photo but it also became a real anxiety medicine for the distressed puppy.

Kristen and Marc run Vintage Pet Rescue at a retirement home/hospice home for elderly dogs located in Rhode Island.

They take care of 32 elderly dogs and do an amazing job.
