This gorgeous ball of fur is Matilda, the cat with ENORMOUS eyes that has captured the heart’s of everyone on the internet.
Matilda has an ocular condition which has caused her eyes to grow much larger than they should have, but it hasn’t stopped her from having an amazing life.
Matilda’s owners said that they adopted their fur baby from a rescue group back in 2013, and her eyes were actually normal size back then.
It was one random day that one of her eye’s went black, it looked like the pupil was gone, so her family, obviously worried, tried to figure out what had caused this.
Her owners explained:
“After she saw a specialist we learned that it is a spontaneous lens luxation, which means that the lens detached from the rest of the eye for no known reason”
“This is the mysterious part of the problem since she is an otherwise healthy cat.”
Shortly after, the other lens detached as well. This prompted her eyes to grow.
Matilda’s eyes have slowly gotten bigger since the lens detachment diagnosis, but no one has any idea why this happened and what could have caused it.
Her owners are in regular contact with the cat’s veterinary eye specialist, who are also completely baffled by this.
Looking for answers, or anyone who could know more about why this had happened, the family have taken to Reddit, a Facebook page, Instagram and a website devoted to Matilda to see if anyone can help.
Thankfully, although her eyes may look painful, Matilda isn’t in any pain at all and is still a normal cat regardless of her rather ‘alien-like’ appearance.
“She is always up to date on her checkups and shots, and they watch her very closely to notice any changes in behavior that might suggest that she’s uncomfortable”
Matilda’s family can only waiy and see if any answers regarding her condition come to light.
They’ve also braced themselves at the fact that if her eyes don’t stabilize before then, Matilda will likely have to undergo surgery to have them removed, their site stated:
“The eyes are obviously enlarged, and while her last check-up suggested regular pressure levels, common sense seems to say that they can only grow so big before something has to give.”
